I've handled solar and EV charging orders for seven years. I've personally made and documented 22 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $31,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's pre-order checklist so other people don't repeat them. That doesn't make me a genius; it makes me a witness.
When I first started in this industry, I assumed the highest-efficiency panel was always the best choice. Three years and a few awkward customer calls later, I realized I was wrong. In 2017, I helped design a system for a customer who had a beautiful high-efficiency array on paper. Then we looked at the actual roof: a chimney cast shade on the main string until 2 PM, and the inverter clipped every time the afternoon sun opened up. The panel efficiency meant nothing. The system design meant everything.

From the outside, it looks like buying a better panel automatically creates a better system. The reality is that a mediocre panel in a well-designed system usually beats a premium panel in a cramped, poorly designed one.
I'm not saying SunPower is the cheapest option, and I'm not saying it's right for everyone. I'm saying the panel is only one component. The design, the inverter, the wire run, the breaker panel — those are the places where the real costs hide.

I used to tell everyone to avoid solar leases. That was a lazy take. A lease can make sense if the contract is fair and you understand it.
The problem is that most people understand their lease about 30 seconds after they sign it. In Q1 2024, I reviewed a lease proposal (not SunPower, but similar) where the customer had no idea there was an annual 2.9% escalation clause. Over 20 years, that changes the payment by a lot. The sales rep had pointed to the first-year payment. The customer had not done the math.
I don't have hard data on every SunPower solar lease buyout schedule across all states. What I can say anecdotally is this: before you sign any lease, ask for three numbers and write them down.

SunPower SunVault Battery Price: The Wrong First Question
Everyone asks about SunPower SunVault battery price. I get it. It's a big number, and it's hard to find because SunPower doesn't publish national pricing.
Here's what I know from quotes I've seen as of Q4 2024: one SunVault 13.5 kWh unit lands between $12,000 and $18,000 installed before incentives. That's a huge range. Maybe $12,400 — no, I'd say $13,800 is closer to what I see on average. I'm mixing up regional averages, so take that with a grain of salt. The point is: the price varies based on your panel layout, your main panel capacity, and whether you need a second gateway or a subpanel.
I wish I had tracked the SunPower SunVault battery price on every quote I've seen over the years. I didn't. So treat that as an anecdotal range, and verify current pricing with a local installer before you build a budget around it.
More importantly, don't ask 'what does it cost?' Ask 'what will it do for me?' A backup battery only earns its keep if your utility has time-of-use rates, frequent outages, or no net metering in the long term. Otherwise, it's a comfort purchase — and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as you know you're buying comfort, not a guaranteed payback.
The Boring Hardware: Inverters and Mounting Brackets
This is where I get suspicious of my own industry. People will spend hours comparing panel efficiency, then accept whatever inverter and racking the installer suggests without asking one question.
A 1.5 kW hybrid inverter can be a completely reasonable choice for a small backup load — fridge, router, a couple of lights. It is not the right choice for an all-electric home with an EV and a heat pump. I learned that the hard way when I okayed a design with a 1.5 kW hybrid inverter for a customer who planned to charge his EV during an outage. The charger wanted around 7 kW. The inverter folded almost instantly. That was a $3,200 mistake, plus a week of schedule delay.
The same logic applies to mounting hardware. I once spent an afternoon replacing a Minn Kota trolling motor mounting bracket on a friend's boat. The old bracket had a cheap adapter that vibrated loose, and every time the motor tilted up, the whole mount shifted. It was a small part, but it dictated the behavior of the entire system.
Solar racking is the same. Roof clamps, rail splices, and lag bolts are not glamorous. But if they're undersized, or torqued wrong, or installed with incompatible flashings, your premium SunPower panels are just very expensive insurance claims waiting for a windstorm.
How to Set Up an EV Charging Station: Start With the Load, Not the Charger
This is the question that turns into a mess more often than any other: how to set up an EV charging station.
My first EV charging install was embarrassing. I assumed it was just a bigger plug. The reality is that the charger is the easy part. The load calculation is the real decision.
According to NEC Article 625, EV charging is a continuous load, which means the circuit should be rated at 125% of the charger's continuous current. In plain terms: a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker. A 32-amp charger can go on a 40-amp breaker. If you ignore that, you're not just risking a nuisance trip — you're creating a fire risk.
And before you call it a no-brainer: a standard 120V outlet will charge a plug-in hybrid overnight, but it adds only a few miles of range per hour. For a full EV with a daily commute longer than 30 miles, you'll want a dedicated 240V circuit. That often means a panel upgrade, especially in an older home. That's not a scam; it's physics.
Why I'd Still Ask the Uncomfortable Questions
You might be thinking: 'My utility has net metering, so I don't need a battery.' That's fair in places where net metering still exists. But many utilities are changing rates. And if you're buying a SunPower system, you're making a 20-year commitment. One rate change can flip the math.
You might also think: 'I'll just start with Level 1 charging.' For a plug-in hybrid, maybe. For an electric car that you drive every day, Level 1 charging gets old fast. I used to think it was enough. Then I drove a customer's EV for a week and saw how quickly a 12-hour overnight charge disappeared after two errands. It was not enough.
I'm not saying every project needs the biggest battery, the largest inverter, or a 60-amp EV circuit. I'm saying the decisions should be made on purpose, with the whole load profile in front of you.
Bottom line: SunPower makes good solar panels. Solar leases aren't automatically bad. The SunVault battery can be the right tool for the right home. But none of that matters if you skip the system design conversation. I've made the mistakes so you don't have to. Check the escalator, verify the price, respect the inverter, measure your loads, and never let a sales pitch outrun the engineering.
