What This Checklist Is For
If you’re close to approving a SunPower solar array—for a home or a small commercial building—read this before you sign anything. I’m a quality and compliance manager for a clean-energy equipment distributor. Depending on the month, I review 150–250 component shipments: solar panels, batteries, inverters, EV chargers, racking, and warranty documents. I’ve rejected deliveries for things that looked fine from the street, and I’ve caught mismatches that would have cost more than the equipment itself.
This checklist will feel overly direct in places. That’s intentional. Use it when the quote says “premium” but the details still need to be proven.
1. Verify the Module Spec Sheet—Not the Brochure
Start with the exact solar module model listed in your quote. SunPower panels typically have good efficiency and degradation numbers—roughly 22% efficiency and 0.25% annual degradation on a current residential datasheet—but “typically” doesn’t live on your roof. The datasheet does.
Look for: nominal wattage, module efficiency, first-year degradation, annual degradation after year one, operating temperature coefficient, and power tolerance. If the panel model changes after the quote, ask for a new spec sheet and a revised production estimate. I once approved a project where a 435 W panel was substituted with a 430 W panel. Five watts sounds minor. Across 300 modules, that’s 1.5 kW of lost capacity, and the adjustment affected the project budget.
2. Get SunVault Battery Cost in Fully Installed Terms
Many buyers land here after reading a headline like “CNET SunPower SunVault battery cost.” That CNET article is useful because it doesn’t quote just the battery module. As of the mid-2025 CNET update, a SunPower SunVault installation lands roughly between $14,000 and $22,000 before the 30% federal tax credit, depending on how many batteries you need and whether the electrical panel requires work.
Don’t treat that range as a fixed quote. Treat it as a starting point. Separate the storage line items in your own proposal:
- Battery capacity in kWh total and usable kWh
- Round-trip efficiency and warranted throughput
- Gateway, monitoring, permits, and tax-credit documentation
- Critical loads panel and any required electrical upgrades
If a battery price seems lower than the CNET bracket, ask what was excluded. I’m not 100% sure why some quotes omit the main panel upgrade, but it happens often enough that I always look for it.
3. Define “Off-Grid” Before You Buy an Inverter
One of the riskiest search terms in solar is “SolarEdge off grid inverter.” SolarEdge hardware itself is solid and widely used, but grid-tied backup is not the same as off-grid operation. Most SolarEdge home systems are designed as grid-tied systems with battery backup. They can keep essential loads running during a utility outage. Full off-grid is a different design job, especially if you need to start well pumps, run motors, or stay disconnected for days.
If your actual requirement is true off-grid or long-duration backup, ask this before signing: can this inverter start and run my well pump or AC compressor without grid support? What happens when the battery reaches low state of charge, and is there a generator input? I’ve seen the word “backup” mean very different things to a sales engineer and to a buyer. Make them define it in writing.
4. Treat a 7kW EV Charger as a Continuous Load
A 7kW EV charger isn’t a toaster. At 240V it draws roughly 30A, and an EV charger is a continuous load, so the branch circuit usually needs to be rated at 125% of that. That means a 40A circuit for most 7–7.6 kW chargers. If the quote shows a 30A breaker, ask why.
The hidden issue is load coordination. If the charger is wired into the backed-up load panel, what happens to battery runtime during an outage? Can the battery and inverter support the EV charger plus refrigerator and lights? If not, install a load management device that automatically pauses charging when solar is low or battery is near empty. That upgrade is cheaper than replacing an undersized battery later.
5. Audit Balance-of-System Components Like a Skeptic
The most expensive words in solar are not “panel” or “warranty.” They are “we’ll use compatible parts.”
I check racking materials for corrosion, grounding methods, wire specifications, and rapid shutdown equipment. The step people skip is connector compatibility. A DC connector from one manufacturer can physically fit an MC4 connector from another manufacturer but still not be designed for the same locking mechanism or temperature rating. Mixing them can create resistance and heat. If you’re buying a commercial solar project, ask for connector brand and type in writing.
For coastal or high-wind sites, aluminum and stainless racking may be necessary. That’s not a luxury upgrade—it’s a material spec.
6. If There’s Wind in the Mix, Audit the Material Spec Too
This one seems unrelated until you’re looking at a hybrid site. I’m often asked “what material are wind turbines made of?” The short version: towers are usually tubular steel; blades are mostly glass-fiber-reinforced composite, with carbon fiber on larger blades when stiffness and weight are critical. Balsa or foam core and epoxy are often part of the blade structure.
I don’t inspect utility-scale turbines, so take this as a solar-side observation rather than a wind-expert opinion. In microgrid or hybrid wind-solar quotes, apply the same rule: if a sales sheet says “composite blades,” ask which composite, what resin system, and what corrosion protection. Material quality shows up in maintenance costs, not on day one.
7. Read Warranty Language as a Performance Spec
After a few years of reviewing equipment, I’ve stopped treating warranty language as legal noise. It’s the last spec sheet. If the manufacturer only covers the battery cell but not the labor to remove and replace it, the total replacement cost lands on the project owner.
In particular, ask who responds when there is a problem. If the module brand has a separate warranty from the installer, determine which warranty applies first. Is labor covered? Is shipping covered? Does the warranty require regular maintenance records? What if the original installer goes out of business?
The uncomfortable questions are the ones worth asking. I’ve had more than one project owner assume the brand warranty was a blanket promise. It isn’t. Saying “covered by manufacturer warranty” is not the same as naming the dollar amount and process.
Bottom Line
SunPower solar equipment can be an excellent choice, but premium solar starts with verified specs and ends with documentation. The biggest quality failure I see is an excellent panel paired with a poorly matched inverter, a vague battery cost, or an EV charger that wasn’t treated as a continuous load.
Run through these checks before you sign. Make the seller put responses in writing. And remember: what was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Solar module lineups, battery options, and pricing change constantly. The fundamentals—verifying specifications, compatibility, and warranties—haven’t changed.
