I manage purchasing for an 86-person company. That means I deal with office supplies, vendor contracts, and occasional surprises from finance. In 2024, our facilities project expanded into solar, and since I am the person who reads contracts, I became the accidental solar buyer. I'm not an engineer. I'm the person who asks the wait, what is actually included? question. Here are the questions I would ask again, without the sales jargon.
What is SunPower Complete Solar for a business buyer?
SunPower Complete Solar, as it appeared in our proposals, means more than the panels. It bundles the modules, racking, inverter, monitoring, and warranty into one package. If we added battery storage or EV charging, those got designed into the same quote instead of bolted on later by different vendors.
I know bundled sounds like a way to mark things up. Sometimes it is. But compare that to the alternative: a cheap equipment list that leaves out disconnects, permits, or monitoring. Complete does not always mean the lowest line-item cost. It means fewer meetings where two vendors each say the other component is the problem.
What does SunPower solar repair actually cover?
Repair is one of those words buyers use differently than service managers. I said the panel is under warranty, so get the repair scheduled. They heard send someone out. Result: the panel replacement was covered, but the trip charge and lift rental were not. That is a gap, not necessarily SunPower being difficult.
That misunderstanding taught me to ask three questions before signing a service agreement. Does the warranty cover parts, labor, or both? Who pays for the truck roll? And what exactly counts as an authorized repair? On the SunPower side, most true warranty claims happen after a panel loses output beyond spec or an inverter part fails. Cleaning bird droppings? That is maintenance, not repair.
What is battery energy storage?
Battery energy storage is the part that takes solar electricity produced during the day and saves it for later. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time. In a business proposal, a battery unit is measured two ways: kilowatt-hours, which is capacity, and kilowatts, which is how fast it can discharge.
Do you need it? Not automatically. If your utility does not have high demand charges and you do not need backup power, a battery may take many years to pay back. If you lose power and run critical equipment, or your utility charges based on peak usage, storage becomes more interesting. I ask the installer to model both kWh and kW separately because a 20 kWh battery with a 5 kW output cannot protect a 10 kW load that needs to run.
What does an RF monitoring system do?
An RF monitoring system is how a solar array tells you something is wrong before you get a painful electric bill. RF stands for radio frequency. In a module-level monitoring setup, each panel sends performance data through a wireless signal to a gateway. The dashboard shows which panel is underperforming without someone climbing on the roof.
When I first saw RF monitoring as a line item, I treated it like an upsell. After one underperforming panel cost us a month of lost production, I now treat it as standard. Monitoring does not create more power. It shortens the time to find the one bad module, which saves money when a system is spread across a large roof.
What is an EV charger pump?
You will not find EV charger pump on a spec sheet. It is buyer shorthand for two big electrical loads arriving together: an EV charger and a heat pump. When people start solar shopping, they often plan for panels and then mention that they want EV charging and maybe a heat pump later.
The issue is that solar sizing is not only about annual energy. It is also about whether the electrical panel can handle charging a car and running a heat pump during the same morning. With a 100-amp service, a 50-amp EV charger plus a heat pump can max you out when both cycle on. A good quote shows the electrical load before and after, not just the number of panels.
Why wasn't the cheapest solar quote the one I picked?
Real talk: I like saving money. My whole procurement job is to make a budget stretch. But I also learned the difference between price and cost. The lowest quote did not include the RF monitoring system at all. The quote I accepted was labeled SunPower Complete Solar. It cost more upfront, but it included higher-efficiency panels, RF monitoring, and a clearer service path.
Run the math on total cost, not price per watt. If one proposal produces more energy each year and degrades slower, the cost per kilowatt-hour can be lower than another proposal even when that other proposal has a lower installation price. I write down every assumption: degradation rate, inverter replacement cost, warranty labor, monitoring connectivity. Then I compare. The cheap quote fails when I add two service visits and the value of lost production.
To be fair, a lower quote can be appropriate for a simple roof and average electric load. I'm not saying expensive always wins. I am saying that if you ignore the long-term production assumptions, you are not comparing solar systems. You are comparing sales pitches.
