If those numbers make you think SunPower is the clear winner, hold on. The price gap between premium and mainstream panels is real. Sometimes it's justified; sometimes it's not.

Or it can mean the cells were made there too. Under FTC rules (ftc.gov), a "Made in USA" label has to be truthful and substantiated. So if someone uses that phrase, ask for the exact product's country of origin documentation. Not the marketing sheet. The actual document.
And with SunPower's restructuring in 2024, the warranty side is worth checking even more carefully. I don't want to speculate about bankruptcy mechanics, because I'm not a securities analyst. But before I put a premium module on a commercial roof, I'd confirm who legally backs the 25-year warranty today. That's not a knock on the panel. It's just due diligence.
Scenario 1: Small roof, long ownership
If your roof is small and your electricity rates are high, high-efficiency panels can make sense. You get the most capacity from a limited area. That's exactly where premium panels like SunPower shine.
But here's the scenario I don't see in most reviews: the small buyer. I'm not talking about a Fortune 500 headquarters. I'm talking about a 5,000-square-foot office or a warehouse with a 40-panel roof. Solar salespeople sometimes ignore smaller commercial deals because the commission is smaller. That's their problem.
When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
If you are a small buyer, do not let an installer talk you into an oversized system because "you can sell credits later." Validate the load first. We did a load study, not a roof study, and it changed the whole system design.
Scenario 2: Big roof, payback mindset
Here's the part that may surprise people: premium panels are often not the best financial choice when you have roof area to spare.
I did a side-by-side cost model for a low-slope roof and a client's feed-in tariff. The premium panel came out about 12% more efficient. But the installation cost per watt was also much higher, and the extra efficiency didn't produce enough extra energy to justify it. We used a conventional tier-1 panel and spent the savings on better racking and just added one more row.
My gut said something was off whenever the numbers pointed to the expensive option. There wasn't a single reason to go premium. It turns out that "slow to reply" from the premium vendor was also a preview of "slow to deliver." I've learned to trust the process and the data, not the brand halo.
If you're in this scenario, get three quotes. Ask for the price per installed watt, not the panel price. The inverter, racking, and labor can be a bigger variable than the module itself.
Scenario 3: Buying for someone else — or building the whole solar system
For contractors and EPCs, the stakes are different. You don't own the system. Your client does. You need a panel that is easy to install, has a stable supply chain, and has a warranty that will still exist in year 10.
That last point is something I now check first. The numbers said the cheapest supplier had the best unit economics. Something felt off about their lack of a warranty response. Turns out, they were restructuring and didn't have a clear answer. We moved on. Looking back, I should have asked for the warranty entity name on the first call.
You also need to plan for the stuff that makes solar a system, not just a panel. On a remote site, we had lightning take out the copper comms lines twice. After that, the engineer specified a fiber optic cable monitoring system for the data link. It cost more up front, but it saved us one service call in the first storm season. If you're designing a solar system, include that in your BOQ.

- Ask for the country of origin. If they won't give it, that's an answer.
- Add the non-panel costs. Monitoring, comms, backup. A solar system is a set of components, not a magical rectangle.
Honestly, SunPower is a solid brand. I'd put its premium modules at the top end of the efficiency range. But if someone tells you SunPower is the only thing to buy, you're talking to a salesperson, not an engineer.
